ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University field hockey team lost to No. 17 Iowa, 2-1, on Sunday at Pruitt Field. The win ended Ohio's (11-3) five-game win streak.
The Bobcats struck first when Marissa Higgins scored her second goal of the season at the 26:58 mark to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Cathryn Altdoerffer was credited with the assist, her fourth of the season. The junior is now second on the team with 24 points.
The visitors answered moments later when Kim Scraper tallied her team-leading 16th goal of the season at the 28:07 mark to tie the game. Scraper came into the game as the nation's second highest goal-scorer.
Altdoerffer almost gave Ohio the lead with under two minutes in the half but had a try cleared off the line by Iowa's Jessica Barnett. Taylor Brown, Jessica Jue, Louzeth Schutte and Brooke Edwards all had tries for the 'Cats in the first 35 minutes. The contest was tied at the half, 1-1, but Ohio held a 9-2 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage on penalty corners.
Laura Mastro had three shots for the Bobcats in the second half as the home side tried to regain the lead against No. 17 Iowa.
However, the Hawkeyes took the lead in the 54th minute on a corner. Junior Jessica Barnett tallied her third goal in the last two games, giving Iowa the 2-1 advantage. Junior Geena Lesiak was credited with the assist.
Brown had a good chance in the 57th minute saved by Iowa goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw and Altdoerffer had the last real chance of the game when her try went wide in the 64th minute. Iowa's defense held off the Bobcats in the remaining minutes, giving the Hawkeyes the 2-1 victory.
Ohio out-shot Iowa 14-4 for the game and had a 9-3 edge on penalty corners.
Ohio returns to MAC play next weekend when it hosts Kent State on Friday at 3 p.m. and Missouri State on Saturday at 1 p.m. If you are planning on attending Saturday's game, you may be charged for parking at the field hockey facility due to Ohio Football's contest with Ball State. The cost would be $5 and come early due to it being Homecoming Weekend.
