ATHENS, Ohio - Louzeth Schutte scored two goals and Ohio Field Hockey reached the midway point of conference play with a 2-0 win over Kent State this afternoon. With the victory, the Bobcats remain undefeated in MAC action through five contests and improve to 12-3 overall.
“I thought the team turned in an exceptional second half,†Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. “We made some adjustments at halftime in the backfield after they put us under a lot of pressure in the first 35 minutes. It wasn’t our usual defensive showing where we come out of the gate with a strong performance but we were resilient and did a nice job on their penalty corners.â€
Schutte raised her goal total to five this season on identical plays in both halves. On two occasions, Jue served up penalty corners to Laura Mastro, who in turn laid the ball off for Schutte. Jue entered the weekend second in the MAC with 26 points and 12th nationally with 12 assists to her credit.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jen McGill posted her sixth shutout by stopping four KSU shots. McGill entered today's game fourth in the nation with a goals-against average of 0.80. She kept Ohio in the game early as KSU had the first three scoring chances and four penalty corner opportunities.
Kent State finished the first half with a 6-3 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners, but Schutte's first goal in the 28th minute, turned the tide in favor of the Bobcats.
“We went into halftime with a lead that was against the run of play due to really good execution on the corner. Lo has been working on those [straight strikes] and she seems to always come through when it matters. She also made some key plays at the other end along with Jen, who made some big saves for us.â€
Ohio flipped the field in the second half and gained five penalty corners, as opposed to one attempt for the Golden Flashes. The Bobcats also had four shots and limited KSU to three tries in the final 35 minutes. Schutte's second goal in the 57th minute effectively took the wind out the visitor’s sails and iced a fifth conference win for the Bobcats.
“I was very happy with how we played with tempo in the second half,†Macmillan added. “We limited them to one corner and three shots in the second half and I was pleased with how we controlled the end of the game.â€
Ohio Field Hockey will honor former player and assistant coach Ali Johnstone as she is inducted into the Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame and hold their "Stick it to Cancer" game against Missouri State tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Be prepared to pay $5 for parking at Pruitt Field due to the home football game.
