ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Field Hockey opened the conference season at Pruitt Field with a hat-trick from Cathryn Altdoerffer and two goals apiece from Brooke Edwards and Taylor Brown in a 9-1 victory over Ball State. The 13th-straight victory over the Cardinals pushed the 'Cats to 9-2, 2-0 in MAC play.
The Bobcats struck just 1:34 into the contest with Brown smashing a one-timer past Fusting for a 1-0 Bobcat lead. The junior from Elkton, Maryland scored her second goal of the contest with another wicked one-timer from the middle to give the Bobcats a two-goal advantage within six minutes.
The Ohio domination continued in the first half when Edwards deflected one home for her seventh goal of the season at 18:57. Kristine Gegas was credited with the assist for the Green & White. Edwards would then steal a BSU pass at midfield and beat the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game and a 4-0 Bobcat lead.
Less than two minutes later it was Altdoerffer getting a breakaway opportunity for the ‘Cats. The junior put it through the legs of BSU’s Haley Fusting for a 5-0 lead. Altdoerffer added a second goal at 32:26 when she cut to the middle of the field from the left corner and beat new BSU goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell.
The Bobcat scoring finished for the half when Jue found the back of the cage with 10 seconds remaining until intermission. Ohio had a 7-0 lead at the break with a 12-0 edge in shots and 3-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Altdoerffer completed her hat-trick in the second half when she found the bottom right corner on a shot that was set up via a corner by Louzeth Schutte. Altdoerffer moved into the team lead with her 10th goal of the 2011 season.
Katherine Fenzel closed the scoring for the Bobcats when she punched on a loose ball in front of the net and pushed the lead to 9-0 at 68:36. BSU got on the board 10 seconds later on a goal by Devanny Kuhn for the final score.
The Bobcats host Miami tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Pruitt Field.
