ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University field hockey team allowed a goal with three minutes remaining and dropped a 1-0 contest this afternoon at Rutgers despite doubling the shot output of the Scarlet Knights.
"It's really disappointing because we had huge periods of dominance." Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "We had plenty of possession in the midfield but just didn't have the ability to put the ball in the net. We hit the post twice, missed a penalty stroke but battled throughout. I thought we still played extremely well and am very pleased with the effort."
Ohio out-shot Rutgers 8-1 in the first half, creating numerous chances against the Scarlet Knight defense. Brooke Edwards was denied once by RU goalkeeper Vickie Lavell and then hit the post while Cathryn Altdoerffer was denied twice, once on a penalty shot. Louzeth Schutte was also stopped by Lavell, Taylor Brown and Katherine Ballard went wide on their tries and Jessica Jue had a chance blocked.
In the second half, Ballard was victimized by the framework and the game remained scoreless as Brown also pushed a shot wide to the left. Ohio's last shot of the game came while Altdoerffer was sitting out due to picking up a green card. With 64 minutes remaining, Courtney Seiders made her first save of the game but shortly after, Christie Morad scored the game-winner for RU.
"We were down a player for a good 15 minutes and we never stopped competing," Macmillan added. "We were dominant for stretches holding the ball in the midfield but we just were not able to get the result we wanted today."
Ohio also held the edge in penalty corners on the afternoon, 8-5.
"The result is disappointing but we're getting better," sophomore Andrea Biegalski said. "We know what we have to do and we just have to come out on Sunday, play well and finish on our chances."
The Bobcats stay on the road for a game at No. 11 Drexel on Sunday at noon.
