ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Field Hockey won their 11th-straight game against a MAC opponent this afternoon with a resounding 7-0 win over Ball State at Pruitt Field. Cathryn Altdoerffer scored a hat-trick after posting the winning score on Saturday against Miami.
"This was important for us after the way we started the conference season last year," Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "Especially against good teams like Miami and Ball State, it was great to see us play the way we did these first two games."
Altdoerffer scord the first, fourth and sixth goal of the afternoon as Ohio scored their most goals at home against a MAC opponent since they beat Miami 9-0 on October 19, 2001. The sophomore scored four goals on the weekend and amassed nine points for the Green & White in the first two games of the 2010 MAC season.
"I think we had sen something where we could exploit them down the right side and she made plays on all her goals today," Macmillan said. "She definitely has the ability to put the ball in the net and from the right side, you're going to get those opportunities."
Leading 1-0, Paige Herr scored her second goal of the season in the ninth minute of play. An intial shot by Ohio's leading goal scorer Taylor Brown was deflected and Herr was able to alertly knock the ball home for a two-goal advantage.
Four minutes later, Ohio was awarded a penalty-stroke opportunity and sophomore back Andrea Biegalski calmly slotted home the third tally of the afternoon. The goal was Biegalski's second one of the season.
Still in the first half, Ohio's leading helped, Brooke Edwards, picked up another after a deflection in front of the cage saw the ball slide off to the left. Edwards was able to get to it and flick off to Katherine Ballard for her second goal of the year and a 5-0 Bobcat lead heading into intermission.
The 'Cats added two more after the break with Altdoerffer's last score and Ballard picking up an assist on Brittany Zorn's second goal of the season.
"Paige, Andrea, Brittany, they're all players that we usually don't count on for goals but they found the scoresheet today," Macmillan added. "We have players that have played further back on the field scoring for us and moving forward. We also have players creating goals since we only scored one off a penalty corner today. It shows that they're getting into the attack and making plays."
Ohio held a 21-2 advantage in shots and picked up six penalty corners while holding the Cardinals to none. The dominating offesnive statistics also helped goalkeeper Courtney Seiders and the rest of the defense earn yet another shuout.
"We let them have a couple easy attacks, which I wasn't too pleased with," Macmillan said. "But we scored seven goals and they only had two shots on goal. You have to be pleased with that because even if they score those, we still win by a nice margin. I like how we kept them from getting any penalty corners though, that was nice to see."
Ohio returns to MAC action next weekend on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Central Michigan. That will be followed with a contest at Michigan State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
