Final Stats

ATHENS, Ohio-Center fielder T.J. Blanton had four hits and knocked in three runs to lead visiting Bowling Green in a 12-5 win Sunday at Bob Wren Stadium to complete a weekend sweep of host Ohio.

BGSU improved to 18-18-1 overall and 9-6 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Bobcats dropped to 11-26 and 6-9 in the league.

Falcon left fielder Dennis Vaughn, shortstop Jon Berti and designated hitter Matthew Pitzulo all drove in a pair of runs, while Vaughn’s three runs scored were a team-high.

Ohio first baseman Jerod Yakubik extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a 3-for-4 performance at the place, scoring three times as well. Shortstop Wesley O’Neill and left fielder Robert Maddox III also had two hits.

BGSU starter Kevin Leady (6-1) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Reliever Patrick O’Brien tossed a scoreless ninth inning. Ohio starter Seth Streich (1-4) pitched four innings in a losing effort, yielding five earned runs on six hits with one strikeout and three walks. Relievers Michael Dillon and Andrew Danko finished the contest with a perfect one and one-third innings.

Unlike the first two games of the series, Ohio dented the scoreboard first on Sunday when center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire drove in Yakubik with an RBI groundout after Yakubik tripled down the right field line.

Bowling Green promptly responded with three runs (two in the second, one in the third), but Ohio third baseman Brian Barnes plated Yakubik again on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice ground ball.

The Falcons tallied three more runs in the fifth and the Bobcats responded again with a Yakubik run in the bottom half of the inning, when he scored from second as BGSU second baseman Logan Meisler let Barnes’ ground ball up the middle skip into the outfield.

BGSU posted two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh, but Ohio answered with a first-pitch homer to left center by Maddox, his 10th homer of the season.

The Falcons got three more runs in the eighth, only to see Ohio respond with a run in the bottom half on pinch hitter Tyler Backstrom’s homer to left center, which was the first dinger of his career.

BGSU had four doubles and three homers on the afternoon.

Ohio will be back in action Tuesday at Cleveland State for a 4 p.m. start.
