Final Stats

ATHENS, Ohio-Ohio third baseman Bryan Barnes homered twice and drove in five runs to go along with a sterling relief effort by Rex Ingham as the Bobcats swept visiting Western Michigan with an 11-5 win Sunday at Bob Wren Stadium.

Ohio improved to 7-22 overall and 4-5 in the Mid-American Conference, while WMU dropped to 5-24 and 1-8 in the league.

Bobcat right fielder Matt Keller recorded two hits, while pitcher/designated hitter Seth Streich, left fielder Robert Maddox III, Barnes and second baseman Zach Keen all scored twice.

Second baseman Zach Thoma went 3-4 to lead the Bronco hitting attack, while he and catcher Brooks Beilke scored twice.

Ingham (1-0) tossed seven innings in relief and picked up his first victory of the season, allowing no earned runs, with four strikeouts and no walks.

WMU starter Billy Morrison (1-4) suffered the loss, as he recorded just five outs, yielding seven earned runs on five hits with no strikeouts and three walks. Reliever Derek Mosher did pitch well to end the game, as he kept Ohio at bay for the final five outs with one strikeout to his credit.

The Broncos put up one run in the first, but Ohio came back with three in the bottom half of the inning on Barnes first dinger, a three-run shot to right center that scored Streich and Maddox. Streich singled earlier in the inning, while Maddox drew a walk.

WMU put up two more in the top of the second, but the Bobcats again responded with five tallies in the bottom of the frame. Catcher Kris McDonough led things off with a homer to left center on the first pitch he saw, while first baseman Tyler Backstrom scored the next run when Streich was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Keen scored on a Maddox groundout, right fielder Jerod Yakubik trotted home on a passed ball and center fielder Adam Gecewich scored Streich on a single to short.

Yakubik tacked on another run in the third when his single up the middle sent home Keen, who coaxed a full-count walk earlier.

Western’s final two runs came in the fourth, while the Bobcats last two came in the sixth when Barnes’ second homer cleared the fence in right center, scoring Maddox, whose first-pitch double careened off the wall in left.

The Bobcats host Duquesne Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Bob Wren Stadium, an event that will serve as Green Out Night. All fans are encouraged to wear GREEN to the game in an effort to “GREEN OUT” Bob Wren Stadium.
