Final Stats
ATHENS, Ohio-The Ohio baseball team got another solid pitching effort to go along with its third-straight offensive onslaught to down Western Michigan 15-3 Saturday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium.
Ohio improved to 6-22 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference, while WMU fell to 5-23 and 1-7 in the league.
Ohio pitcher Jason Moulton (1-1) picked up the win, allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Reliever Ben Trimbur was credited with his first save after finishing the game by allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in the contest's final three frames.
Bronco starter Eric Heckaman (0-5) got the loss after he was knocked out in the fourth inning after he yielded nine runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks in three and two-thirds innings.
The Bobcat hitting attack was led by right fielder Jerod Yakubik, who had a team-high five RBIs. He, third baseman Bryan Barnes and center fielder Adam Gecewich all had three hits and shortstop Wesley O'Neill scored twice.
Third baseman Grant Simotes, designated hitter Chris Lewis and shortstop Patrick Duncan drove in runs for the visitors.
Ohio got a run in the bottom of the third inning on a Yakubik double to left field, but its 10-run inning in the fourth put the game out of reach quickly.
RBI singles by Gecewich, first baseman Tyler Backstrom, and catcher Kris McDonough accounted for the first three runs of the inning before Yakubik came up again and launched a two-run double to right center. Designated hitter Seth Streich knocked him in with a double to right before left fielder Robert Maddox III plated him with a two-run blast to left on the first pitch he saw. Gecewich knocked in Barnes, who doubled earlier, with another first-pitch homer, this time to left center.
Western added a run in the fifth, but the Bobcats came right back with three in the bottom half of the inning. Yakubik rocketed another two-run double into the right field corner and Streich lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring O'Neill, who was hit by a pitch.
The two teams traded runs in the eighth, with Ohio's tally coming on yet another first-pitch homer by Streich, who sent this offering out to right center.
Yakubik's three doubles gave him seven for the season.
The Bobcats are hitting .452 as a team in their last three games, led by Streich's .700 effort and Gecewich's .625 clip. Gecewich also has a team-best three homers, 10 RBIs, 23 total bases and 1.438 slugging percentage during the stretch.
