GREENVILLE, S.C.-Four Paladins managed at least two hits and Ohio was victimized by three errors in the field Sunday as Furman knocked off the Bobcats 10-7 at Latham Stadium.
Furman swept the series and improved to 5-6 overall, while Ohio dropped to 1-8.
Paladin right fielder Will Owens went 3-3, while second baseman Will Muzika, center fielder Will Miller and first baseman Aaron Thompkins all had two hits. Thompkins had a team-high two RBIs, while he and Muzika scored twice.
Ohio center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire and catcher Kris McDonough had five of the team’s six RBIs, with both gathering two hits, as did left fielder Adam Gecewich. Eldemire and first baseman Jerod Yakubik paced the team with two runs scored. Yakubik also walked four times.
Furman reliever Bobby Lyne (1-0) got the win, allowing just one run on one hit with one walk in two innings. Nick Karow got pitched a clean last one and two-thirds innings to pick up his second save. Ohio reliever Ben Trimbur (0-1) suffered the loss after pitching one and two-thirds frames himself, with one run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Bobcat starter Ryan Bores went four and one-third innings, but fell victim to subpar defensive play as Ohio’s miscues yielded six unearned runs.
“We had one bad inning defensively, kicked a few ground balls, mis-communicated on a play at first base and made a bad play in the outfield,†said Ohio head coach Joe Carbone. “We hit the ball well again but we’re going to make some adjustments to shore up our defense. We can’t keep giving away runs.â€
Eldemire got the visitors out to a good start in the first when his two-run blast cleared the wall in left center, scoring Yakubik, who had walked just prior to the at bat.
Following a Furman first-inning tally, Bobcat third baseman C.J. Maszal raced home on a wild pitch by Paladin starter Barry Benton. Maszal reached on a single to center.
Furman’s big inning was in the bottom of that frame when it scored five to take a 6-3 lead.
Ohio cut the lead to one with three in the fourth after Eldemire laced an RBI double to left center (scoring shortstop Wesley O’Neill who reached on a fielder’s choice) and McDonough followed two batters later with a two-run single to left, plating Eldemire and Yakubik, who had walked again.
Furman added four more runs with one in the fifth and three in the seventh. Ohio’s last run came in the bottom of the seventh on a homer to right center by third baseman Seth Streich.
Both teams left nine men on base, while McDonough stole his second base in the fourth inning.
Ohio will be back in action Tuesday against West Virginia State at 4 p.m. in VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
