YPSILANTI, Mich.-Eastern Michigan's Carlos Medlock scored 31 points on 8-12 shooting to lead the homestanding Eagles past Ohio by a score of 70-61 Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improved to 12-11 overall and 4-6 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Bobcats dipped to 12-11 and 3-6 in the league.
EMU's Brandon Bowdry (17 points, 15 rebounds) and Justin Dobbins (12 points, 10 boards) added to Medlock's heroics as each posted double-double efforts. That trio shot a combined 22-38 from the field (.579 FG%) and accounted for all but 10 of the Eagles' points. Medlock and Antonio Green shared top team honors with four assists apiece.
Ohio's Armon Bassett was the visitors' leading scorer with 19 points off the bench, while D.J. Cooper had 15 points and Reggie Keely added 11 and a team-high eight rebounds. Bassett had a team-high four assists, while Tommy Freeman had a game-high three steals.
The game stayed tight in the first half, with the Eagles holding the stanza's largest lead of five (13-8) on a Green free throw seven minutes, 38 seconds into the game. After a Freeman 3-pointer with two minutes, 10 seconds left, Dobbins and Bowdry hit back-to-back layups to give EMU a three-point lead (25-22) at the half.
The Eagles took another five-point (34-29) advantage when Jay Higgins canned a 3-pointer three and a half minutes into the second half, but the Bobcats roared back with a 9-0 run in the game's next one minute 58 seconds to take a four-point (38-34) lead on a Bassett 3-pointer with 14:32 left.
EMU regained the lead, but Cooper knotted the game for a sixth time (46-all) on a 3-pointer with nine minutes, 26 seconds left. The Bobcats pulled to within one (50-49) on another Basset triple with seven minutes, 32 seconds to go, but Medlock had 11 points in the contest's final three minutes, one second to gradually put the game away.
The Bobcats held a commanding 21-3 edge in bench points, but lost the battle on the glass by a 36-28 margin.
Ohio shot 40 percent (22-55) for the game, compared to 48.1 percent (25-52) for the Eagles.
The Bobcats will be back in action Tuesday evening when Western Michigan visits the Convocation Center in Athens for a 7 p.m. ET tip.
