ATHENS, Ohio-D.J. Cooper and Reggie Keely both notched double-doubles as visiting Ohio got out of Savage Arena with a 65-58 overtime win at Toledo Thursday evening. The Bobcats improved to 12-10 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Rockets dropped to 3-20 and 0-9 in the league.
Cooper, the league's leader in assists and steals and the only player in the top 25 nationally in the two categories, did his damage in two other areas with 10 points and a season-high 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Reggie Keely notched his first-ever double-double with 14 points and a season-high 11 boards. Tommy Freeman had a team-high 17 points, while Kenneth van Kempen dented double digits with 10. Asown Sayles had a team-high three assists.
Toledo's Justin Anyijong had a double-double of his own with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jake Barnett contributed 19 on 5-20 shooting and Jordan Dressler posted 14. Malcolm Griffin notched a game-high eight helpers.
The Bobcats' defense held the hosts to just two points in the game's first nine minutes, 26 seconds, which helped build a 13-point lead (25-12) at the 2:37 mark on a van Kempen jumper. The Rockets then mini-rallied with a 6-0 run before the half to pull within seven at 25-18.
Toledo hung with the Bobcats in the second half by not allowing the visitors' advantage to get beyond nine and actually took a two-point lead (44-42) on a Barnett jumper with six minutes, 32 seconds left in regulation. Freeman put Ohio back up with a layup nearly three minutes later, a lead the Bobcats held until Barnett nailed a 3-pointer from the corner with seven seconds left to force overtime.
Ohio got out to a good start in the extra period, scoring the first six points, while keeping Toledo off the board until 55 seconds left in the game. The Bobcats finished off the Rockets by hitting four free throws from that point on.
The Bobcats won the rebounding battle 50-40, held a 13-4 edge in points off turnovers and a 9-1 margin in bench points.
Ohio will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. when it takes on Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
