ATHENS, Ohio - Katherine Ballard's first-half goal was not enough as Ohio (9-9, 5-3) fell to Kent State (11-6, 6-2) this afternoon at Pruitt Field, 4-1.
Ballard's goal in the eighth minute was her fourth of the season and the senior canceled out a Kent score two minutes prior. The assist was credited to Brooke Edwards, her eighth of the season to put her alone in third place on the MAC leaderboard. Ballard and Edwards were the two goal-scorers in the 'Cats win over the Golden Flashes last year at Pruitt Field.
It was the first home loss of the conference season for Ohio and the first blemish at Pruitt Field in conference play since dropping a 3-2 affair back on Aug. 26, 2008 to Miami. This was the first regular-season home loss since a 2-1 decision to nationally-ranked Ohio State back on Aug. 31.
"You could see it today, we just didn't come out with any fire," Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "We only got going those last 15 minutes and for a Division I team to come out and play like that, there's no excuse."
Kent out-shot Ohio 9-3 and held an 8-1 edge in penalty corners. Cathryn Altdoerffer and Taylor Brown were the only two Bobcats other than Ballard to register a shot.
Debbie Bell, the MAC's leading scorer and one of the top-10 goal-scorers in the country, had two goals for the Golden Flashes. Reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Week Rachel Miller added her ninth goal of the year and an assist while Nicole Leach scored four points on a goal and two helpers.
Tomorrow's contest with Central Michigan starts at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Ohio will honor its seniors, Ballard, Brittany Zorn, Courtney Seiders and Paige Herr. Everyone in attendance will also be given a pink ribbon to support Ohio's "Attack for the Cure."
