ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University field hockey team (6-6, 2-1) took an early lead but lost on penalty strokes at Central Michigan this afternoon, 2-1. It is the first conference defeat of the season for the Bobcats.

"I think it was dissapointing and we didnt perform as well as we could have today," Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "We certainly didn't control the game as we wished and Central did a good job capitalizing on opportunuties we gave them."

In the third minute of action, Taylor Brown scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season off a penalty corner. Paige Herr took the penalty corner and she along with Jenna Green were credited with assists on the play.

CMU held an advantage at the break on shots (7-4) and penalty corners (5-3) but Ohio had the edge where it counted, on the scoreboard.

The Chippewas answered quickly in the second half as less than two minutes in Bailey McKeon scored her first goal of the season to even the score, 1-1. Brooke Sihota, the leading point-scorer for CMU, was credited with the assist.

Much like the first half, the team that did not score dominated the offensive statistics as Ohio out-shot CMU 6-2 and held the edge in penalty corners 4-2.

Neither team scored in overtime but Ohio goalkeeper Courtney Seiders made six of her 11 saves to keep the 'Cats in it.

"Courtney did an outstanding job in goal," Macmillan added. "She had some key clearances and saves and I thought Jenna was also extremely strong today in the back."

The open play benefited both teams in the extra sessions as Ohio was able to fire off nine shots. However, no one could find the back of the cage for the Green & White. Cathryn Altdoerffer finished with five shots on goal, Brown had three, Jessica Jue had two and Herr added one.

"We had chances at scoring in overtime and were unable to find the net," Macmillan said. "We restricted their forwards to limited opportunities but we made some poor decisions up front and those cost us as the game went along."

Ohio steps out of conference tomorrow afternoon for a match at No. 6 Michigan State. The contest is slated to start at 1 p.m.
