Final Stats
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-Bowling Green’s Joe Jakubowski had a game-high 18 points on 7-8 shooting (4-5 3FG) to lead the host Falcons past Ohio 65-57 Wednesday evening in Anderson Arena. BGSU improved to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the league, while Ohio dropped to 9-9 and 0-4 in the league.
The Falcons’ Scott Thomas chipped in 16 points to go with Erik Marschall’s 12 points and game-high nine boards. Thomas, Jakubowski and Dee Brown all contributed three assists.
Ohio was led by 10 points apiece from D.J. Cooper and Kenneth van Kempen. Both players also posted a team-best five rebounds, while Cooper had five assists and three steals, improving upon his MAC-best 2.82 swipes per game. Backcourt mate Armon Bassett chipped in three assists.
The Bobcats had a fair amount of success in the first half against BGSU’s stingy zone defense and jumped out to a 10-point lead (29-19) on a van Kempen layup with less than a minute remaining in the half.
The Falcons fired right back from that point, however, with a 13-2 run over the game’s next three-plus minutes. BGSU pulled ahead 32-31 on a Jakubowski jumper with 16:37 left to play. The game, which saw six ties and 14 lead changes, remained tight the rest of the way.
Ohio pulled ahead by three (57-54) on a Bassett layup with 3:58 left, but missed its last six field goal attempts down the stretch, while BGSU ran off the game’s last 11 points.
The Bobcats’ bench brigade outshined the Falcons’ reserves by a wide margin of 27-10 and Ohio continued to take good care of the ball, winning the turnover battle nine to 11.
The 3-point line was another story, however, as BGSU made 41.7 percent (5-12) compared to the Bobcats’ 14.3 percent clip (3-21). The Falcons also took advantage of 25 free throw attempts in the second half after not getting to the line in the game’s first 20 minutes.
BGSU shot 60 percent (12-20) from the field in the second half and outrebounded Ohio 34-30.
The Bobcats will be back in action Saturday, when Buffalo invades the Convo for a 2 p.m. tip, which will be televised on FSN Ohio.
