ATHENS, Ohio- Ohio Wrestling continued its unbeaten streak in the Convocation Center Thursday, earning an impressive 29-7 victory over the visiting Northern Illinois Huskies. The Bobcats (8-2, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) have now won four straight dual meets at home. The Green and White took eight of the ten bouts on the night, including two major decisions and one pin.
Erik Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) got things started off on the right foot for Ohio, as he took an 11-2 major decision in the first bout of the day. Redshirt sophomore Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) then promptly won the next bout, taking a 3-1 decision over NIU’s Dakota Greenhaw.
The most exciting match of the early bouts was in the 125-pound class, when Gabe Ramos (Hopatcong, N.J.) won a thrilling overtime decision over Israel Montemayor by a final score of 10-8. Ramos leapt out to an early 7-5 lead at the end of the first period, but Montemayor earned three of the next five points to push the bout to overtime. Ramos came up big in the extra period, lunging forward for the winning takedown.
The Convo was alive after Ramos’ rousing victory, which Quentin Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) followed up immediately and emphatically with a 9-0 major decision over Huskie Zach Taylor.
Another exciting bout came just moments later, this time in the 141-pound class. Bobcat Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) erased an early deficit to take an inspired 10-8 decision. Lindsey was down 5-1 early to Pat McLemore but refused to take a loss. He stormed back in the final two periods, outscoring McLemore 9-3.
“That guy (McLemore) is a tough one to wrestle,†said head coach Joel Greenlee. “It was unbelievable that he (Lindsey) came back from being down like that to win. That shows a lot of heart on his part.â€
Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and Nick Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) turned in solid performances for the Bobcats, taking decisions of 8-3 and 5-3, respectively.
Senior Kevin Christensen (Fairborn, Ohio) had a great bout in the 165-pound class, pinning the Huskies’ John Odeen in 5:52.
