Sept. 27, 2009

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri - It was an unusual weekend for the Bobcats, beginning with their Saturday game at Saint Louis being canceled due to inclement weather. Unfortunately it did not get better on Sunday, as Ohio fell 3-2 in overtime to the Missouri State Bears.

The match started off well for Ohio, with Marcy Dull (Ephrata, Pa.) firing two shots just moments in. One of which was saved by the Bears' goalkeeper, Steph Anderson. The teams then traded possession for the next few moments of the match. In the 15th minute, Missouri State opened up a flurry of shots towards Ohio `keeper Courtney Seiders (Mt. Joy, Pa.). Seiders saved five of them, with one going wide.

Just moments later, right around the half-hour mark, Patty Donahue (Powell, Oh.) scored for the Bobcats. She was given a nice pass by Dull, and then tucked it in the net from four yards out on the right side. The goal was her first of the season and gave the `Cats a 1-0 lead.

Katherine Ballard (Charlottesville, Va.) almost had a goal for the Green and White just a few moments into the second half, but her shot rang off the post. Just a minute later, the `Cats were able to find the back of the net again, as a great individual effort by Katelyn Shelley (Ephrata, Pa.) led to an Ohio goal. The goal was unassisted, as Shelley stole the ball from the defender and was able to fire it past Anderson.

"She scored along the baseline...buried it in far post," said head coach Neil Macmillan. "She had the keeper beat and did a great job."

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, this 2-0 lead would not hold up. With ten minutes remaining in regulation, the Bears' Melissa Lantz scored her fourth goal of the year to make it a one-goal game. Not even five minutes later she struck again and knotted up the game at two apiece with her fifth tally of the season. Kristina O'Connor provided the assist for this second Missouri State goal.

Ohio put together a solid attack near the end of regulation, with Taylor Brown (Elkton, Md.) and Shelley hitting shots on goal. Cathryn Altdoerffer (Conestoga, Pa.) also fired one that went wide.

With the score deadlocked 2-2 at the end of regulation, the Bobcats headed into overtime for the second time this season.

Missouri State (3-6) came into overtime firing on all cylinders, accumulating seven shots, with six on goal. Seiders was equal to five of them, but Alyssa Hile scored the decisive tally ten minutes into the period. Lantz got her fifth point of the day on this goal, as she provided the assist.

The Bobcats (2-6) next game is on Saturday at Central Michigan. Game time is set for 1 pm.
