RALEIGH, N.C. - With its second-highest point total of the season, the Ohio wrestling team (8-6-1, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) took down NC State (4-11-1, 0-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), 30-12, on the road in Reynolds Coliseum to split its two duals against ACC foes this weekend. The Bobcats fell to North Carolina by a score of 26-12 on Saturday in Chapel Hill.
The Wolfpack has been plagued with injuries and was forced to forfeit bouts at 125 and heavyweight, with Ohio's victories credited to Tim Silvers (Eaton, Ohio) and Justin Powell (Youngstown, Ohio), respectively. At 133 pounds, redshirt sophomore Quentin Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) defeated Darrius Little by decision, 8-5, to finish the weekend undefeated. He now stands at 14-10 on the year after earning two victories on the road trip.
Sophomore Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) won an 11-5 decision over Ryan Tice to split his bouts for the weekend and improve to 8-4 this season at 141 pounds. Junior Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) picked up a shutout major decision, 8-0, against Sean Smith at 149 pounds and is now 13-9 this season.
NC State then won three bouts in a row to earn its 12 points, starting with Kody Hamrah's pin of Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) in 4:16 at 157 pounds. Tucker fell to 16-14 on the season, while Hamrah improved to 26-7. In the 165-pound match-up, the Pack's Quinton Godley earned a tight 3-2 decision over redshirt freshman Tommy Weinkam (Cincinnati, Ohio), who is now 10-4 this season.
Redshirt junior Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) lost only his second bout of the season and saw his four-match winning streak end when Jake Burge won a close 3-2 decision at 174 pounds. Ison dropped to 9-2 this season, while Burge moved to 17-7.
Ohio got back on track when redshirt freshman Nick Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) won a 3-1 decision over Mark Jahad at 184 pounds. Purdue improved to 16-10 this season, having wrestled the majority of the year at 174 to fill in for an injured Ison. The Bobcats won the final bout of the dual when Erik Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.), also wrestling up a weight class at 197, pinned Joe Trotto in 4:40 for his fifth consecutive victory and his 10th win of the year.
