ATHENS, Ohio - In a battle for second place in the Mid-American Conference, seventh-ranked Central Michigan got the best of Ohio in the final regular season dual, winning 35-3 in The Convo Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats finish 3-2 in the conference, good for third place, while CMU improved to 4-1 to claim second behind No. 23 Kent State.
Ohio (9-9-1) earned one win over Central Michigan (17-3-1) thanks to redshirt junior Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio). Tucker won a tight decision over Eric Cubberly, 3-2, to improve to 20-14 on the year. He leads the Bobcats in wins and has now won four bouts in a row, finishing league action with a team-best 4-1 record.
The dual began at 125 pounds, with ninth-ranked Scotti Sentes of Central Michigan defeating freshman Tim Silvers (Eaton, Ohio) by major decision, 12-3. The Chips trotted out another ranked wrestler at 133, where 20th-ranked Conor Beebe won a close match over redshirt sophomore Quentin Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), 2-0.
At 141 pounds, Ohio’s Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) was locked in an active match with Jeff Shutich that went to overtime with the score tied 8-8. Shutich scored a takedown in the extra minute to win by sudden victory, 10-8. Lindsey dropped to 9-7 on the year and 2-3 in conference duals.
Steve Brown, ranked 13th in the nation at 149 pounds, took on Ohio’s Seth Morton in a hard-fought contest at 149. Brown scored a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third to put the match out of reach, winning 7-2. Morton fell to 13-12 on the season and 0-3 in the MAC.
Central Michigan jumped out to a 13-0 lead, but Tucker’s decision at 157 brought the score to 13-3 halfway through the dual. The Chippewas did not let up, however, coming back in the next bout with a pin of freshman Steve Wilson by 12th-ranked Trevor Stewart in 2:03.
At 174, redshirt freshman Nick Purdue fell to ninth-ranked Mike Miller by major decision, 10-2. Purdue dropped to 17-11 and finished with a 2-1 mark in the league.
Ohio was forced to forfeit the 184-pound match, giving CMU another six points. The second overtime bout of the dual followed at 197, as sophomore Chris Iammarino (Lyndhurst, Ohio) was tied at 1-1 with Eric Simaz at the end of regulation but suffered a takedown in the extra minute to fall 3-1.
The final match saw much action from redshirt freshman Andy Hartshorn and CMU’s Jarod Trice, as Trice scored three takedowns in the second period with Hartshorn escaping from them all, but Hartshorn was unable to gain any ground, losing a 13-7 decision to Trice.
The Bobcats will have two weeks off before the MAC Championships, hosted by Eastern Michigan. The tournament will be held March 7-8 in Ypsilanti, Mich. For more information, please click here.
