MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - In the final road dual of the regular season, Ohio fell to Eastern Wrestling League foe West Virginia, 37-9, in the WVU Coliseum Saturday night. The Bobcats (8-8-1, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) won three of the ten bouts, with Quentin Keyes, Clay Tucker and Erik Schuth picking up victories over the Mountaineers (7-4-1, 3-0-1 EWL).
West Virginia has now defeated Ohio the last two years, also winning in Athens last season by a margin of 28-13. WVU, third in the EWL, recorded four falls in the dual and also caught a break when Ohio’s Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) was forced to default due to injury after less than two minutes into his bout with 11th-ranked Kurt Brenner.
In the opening match, West Virginia’s Kyle Turnbull pinned Tim Silvers (Eaton, Ohio) in 2:51 to give the Mountaineers a 6-0 lead. Silvers is now 5-15 at 125 pounds in his freshman campaign, while Turnbull improved to 2-4 on the season.
At 133 pounds, Ohio’s Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) controlled the second and third periods to defeat Tyler Oravec by decision, 7-4, and narrow WVU’s lead to 6-3. Keyes improved his season mark to 15-11 and dropped Oravec to 3-8.
Redshirt freshman Darrin Boing (Northfield Center, Ohio) appeared in his first dual in the 141-pound slot for the Bobcats against freshman Colin Johnston. Johnston dominated the bout, recording a near fall in the first and second periods and winning by major decision, 11-0. Boing is now 8-7 on the year, wrestling the majority of the action at 133 pounds.
Ohio junior Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) almost defeated three-time NCAA qualifier and 19th-ranked senior David Jauregui, but Jauregui scored a takedown in the final minute to win a 3-1 decision. Morton had the bout tied at 1-1 in the third period and nearly earned a takedown, but Jauregui avoided it and turned it into two points of his own for the win. Morton is now 13-10 on the year and 6-4 in duals, while Jauregui improved to 10-2 for the season.
In the 157-pound match, Tucker, a junior from Martins Ferry, Ohio, notched his team-leading 18th win of the year with a 7-1 decision over redshirt freshman Ryan Goodman. Tucker controlled the match and recorded a near fall in the third period to post a 2-0 mark on Ohio’s weekend road trip, as he also won last night against Kent State. Midway through the dual, the Mountaineers held a 13-6 advantage.
True freshman Steve Wilson (Marion, Ohio) competed for Ohio at 165, trying to earn his first-career win but WVU’s Donnie Jones had other ideas, pinning Wilson in 4:18 to drop Wilson to 0-5 on the season. Jones improved his mark to 7-2 and increased his team’s lead to 19-6.
In a much-anticipated match-up at 174 pounds, Ison was facing 11th-ranked and three-time NCAA qualifier Brenner. With the score 4-1 in favor of Brenner in the first period, Ison was forced to default due to injury, moving the overall score to 25-6 for West Virginia.
Ohio picked up three more points when sophomore Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) won a tight 3-1 decision over freshman Lance Bryson at 184 pounds. Schuth notched a takedown in the first period and an escape in the third to give him his 11th win of the season and move his mark to 7-3 in duals.
At 197 pounds, West Virginia’s Matt Ryan pinned Chris Iammarino (Lyndhurst, Ohio) in 1:34, dropping Iammarino to 12-16 in his sophomore season and giving Ryan, a redshirt freshman, his first win in two tries.
The final bout saw another pin for the Mountaineers, as 18th-ranked heavyweight Dustin Rogers earned the fall in 4:42 over redshirt freshman Justin Powell (Youngstown, Ohio). Powell dropped to 4-5 on the year, while Rogers improved to 14-4.
The Bobcats return to Athens for a weekend homestand to close out the regular season against MAC rivals Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan on Friday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 22, respectively.
