GREENSBORO, N.C.- After a busy day that included 608 bouts in ten hours, Ohio Wrestling is tied for eighth place in the 30-team field of the 2009 Southern Scuffle. Nine Bobcat wrestlers remain in the tournament, with five (Germane Lindsey, Jacob Ison, Nick Purdue, Erik Schuth and Andy Hartshorn) earning their way to the quarterfinal rounds of the championship bracket.
Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) won both of his bouts while wrestling in the 141-pound class on Tuesday, taking a 9-3 decision over Liberty's Scott Clymer and an impressive 11-1 major decision against Jaaziah Bethea of George Mason.
174-pound grappler Ison (Batavia, Ohio) compiled an undefeated 3-0 record on the day, winning two bouts by decision and one by pin. He will wrestle against Virginia's Christopher Henrich in one of tomorrow's quarterfinal rounds.
Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) won both of his bouts while wrestling at 184 pounds on Tuesday, winning with a 16-0 technical fall and a 7-1 decision over wrestlers from Duke and Army, respectively.
197-pound wrestler Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) only needed to win one bout to advance to the quarterfinal round, and he did just that with a 9-6 decision over Cornell's George Kocher. He will square off against Zachary Bennett from the University of North Carolina in one of tomorrow's quarterfinal competitions.
Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) had a very impressive day while wrestling in the heavyweight division, as he won all three of his rounds to advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals. One of his victories came by pin, another by major decision and the final by decision.
Also still competing for Ohio (6-0, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) are Quentin Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Darrin Boing (Northfield Center, Ohio), Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio), who combined for 11 victories in the first day of competition.
