SALEM, Va. - The Bobcats put forth a very solid effort at their first tournament of the regular season, competing in the 2009 Hokie Open. The tournament began at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with 379 wrestlers competing in the day's events.
Placing best for Ohio was redshirt sophomore Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Oh.), who finished 4th in the heavyweight class. He compiled a 3-1 record on the day, defeating some quality opponents in his charge through the bracket.
"I thought Andy performed great," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "He beat Dustin Porter who was a national qualifier at one time and was ranked as high as 12th in the country, so it was a great day for him."
Kyle Sanders (Columbus, Oh.) had a very good day for the Bobcats, posting a 5-1 record (including one pin in 27 seconds) to finish 5th in the 197-lb class.
"Great day for a true freshman," said Greenlee. "He wrestled well. We thought he was pretty good ever since he got here and now I think that he's starting to think he's pretty good as well."
Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Oh.) performed very well in the 149-lb class, finishing in 5th when all was said and done. He posted a 5-1 record throughout the tournament, pinning one of his opponents in 1:39.
Ohio's Nick Purdue (Genoa, Oh.) competed well in the 184-lb class, finishing in 6th place with a 4-2 record that included one pin.
The rest of the Bobcats finished with good competition records, even if they didn't make it to some of the final bouts.
"I felt great about the whole team today," said Greenlee. "We had some guys really go deep into the tournament that didn't place, but they were 4-2, 5-2...so it really was a great day for a lot of guys. It was a great way to open up a year."
"I think we're pretty tough. We've got a great group of guys that are doing all of the right things and as they continue to do those things they will continue to get better."
The Bobcats will next compete at the Michigan State Open on November 15.
