ATHENS, Ohio - Navy's Cassie Consedine nailed a 30-foot 3-pointer and forward Angela Myers hit four free throws in the final 19 seconds to give the visiting Midshipmen a 55-51 win over Ohio Monday evening in the Convocation Center.
Ohio dropped to 0-2 overall, while Navy improved to 3-0.
"We fought hard tonight, and we played well defensively and rebounded good," Ohio coach Semeka Randall said. "We didn't hit our shots tonight, and we didn't make free throws. That was the difference. We've got some time now to go back to the drawing board and keep working to get better."
Bobcat forward Da'Keisha Mann scored a game-high 15 points and forward Kamille Buckner added 10, with seven rebounds and five steals. Guard Jenny Poff had four points, five assists and a game-high nine boards as well.
Navy was led by Consedine's 11 points and seven rebounds and guard Jasmine Pitts added 10. Kristin Bowen also chipped in three steals.
Ohio dominated the post, outscoring Navy 28-6 in the paint, while holding a massive 49-30 edge on the glass. However, Navy made the most of its attempts at the line, netting 21 of 25 shots (84 percent), while the Bobcats converted on just 50 percent (9-18).
After a tight first half, Ohio opened up its largest lead of the game with a layup by Mann at the 17:06 mark of the second half to go up by eight (33-25). Navy gradually whittled the lead down and took its first lead of the game (41-40) on a pair of Myers free throws with 6:01 left.
Consedine gave Navy its largest lead of the game at the 3:06 mark on a 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer to put the visitors up 48-42. The Bobcats closed the margin back to two and had a chance to tie the game with 20 seconds left, but couldn't convert a jumper from the wing. Myers rebounded the miss and hit the ensuing free throws to put the game away.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Convo against George Washington.
