ATHENS, Ohio - Up by one point heading into the final match, Ohio’s Justin Powell secured the victory with a takedown at the last second to get the win for the Bobcats over Buffalo, 19-15. Ohio (7-5-1, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) remains unbeaten in MAC action this season as they handed the Bulls (9-5, 1-1 MAC) their first conference loss of the year.
Ohio dropped the first two matches and found itself down 9-0 early, but a major decision victory by Germane Lindsey started the comeback. The Bobcats recorded four-straight wins to hold the lead, 16-12, and were ahead 16-15 going into the final bout at heavyweight. Powell (Youngstown, Ohio), a redshirt freshman, was locked in a tough match against Buffalo’s Brett Correll, and with the crowd calling for a takedown, Powell delivered as time expired in the third period to earn a 6-4 decision and seal victory for Ohio.
“I think all our guys train hard, all our guys are in good shape and ready to go, and I had a lot of confidence in all of them today,†said head coach Joel Greenlee. “This gives us momentum, when last year we didn’t win a single MAC dual meet, and now we’re 2-0 and our name is at the top of the standings. That’s what I like to see.â€
