Results through round one

YORKTOWN, Ind. - The Ohio University women's golf team finished the first day of a tightly-contested Cardinal Classic at The Players Club in a tie for sixth place with a team total of 312 (+24), just 10 strokes behind tournament leader and host Ball State.

"This course is very scoreable, and we took advantage of that with a good day in the short game," Ohio head coach Kelly Ovington said. "We worked very hard during last week's practices to gain confidence in that area, and that confidence turned into results today."

Senior Lindsay Bergman (Blacklick, Ohio) will head into the final round with a share of 10th place after firing a career-best 76 (+4) on Monday, besting the final-round 77 she posted at last year's Mid-American Conference Championship. She is just six strokes off the pace after 18 holes.

"I'm ecstatic to see a senior step up and take charge like that," Ovington said. "We all knew she had it in her. She's got a great game, and she's got a good head on her shoulders, which is a great combination in golf."

Freshman Megan Weaver (Canton, Ohio), making her collegiate debut on Monday, and junior Lauren Bergman (Blacklick, Ohio) both posted first-round scores of 78 (+6) on Monday to grab a share of 25th place heading into the final round. Sophomore Jordan Fesh (Toledo, Ohio) and junior Colleen Lienesch (Centerville, Ohio) will take the course on Tuesday tied for 38th and 60th, respectively, after carding scores of 80 and 84 on the afternoon.

"This is a tight field, and a lot of teams played really well today," Ovington said. "Making up 10 strokes is a bit of a challenge, but it's all about believing that we can do it. We've stressed with the team to not afraid to be great, and we'll see how we come out tomorrow morning."

The final round of the Cardinal Classic will be held tomorrow at The Players Club, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start scheduled to commence play.
