TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ohio baseball team belted 17 hits and took advantage of seven errors in a 17-7 route of Toledo Sunday afternoon in the rubber game at Scott Park. Ohio improves to 15-12 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-American Conference, currently first in the MAC East Division standings. Toledo's record falls to 8-14 and 3-3 in the MAC.
"We swung the bats real well today and did some things that we've been trying to do all year," said Ohio Head Coach Joe Carbone. "We feel fortunate to get out of here with a victory against a good team like Toledo. We're happy to walk away with two out of three on the road against a good team."
Senior Matt Stiffler (Bellbrook, Ohio) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and his team-leading fourth triple of the season, to extend his school-record hitting streak to 22 games. Senior co-captain Zach Hartle (Toledo, Ohio) was 2-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored and sophomore Marc Krauss (Deshler, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with four runs and one RBI on the day. Junior catcher Chris Klimko (McKeesport, Pa.) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Freshman Gauntlett Eldemire (Shaker Heights, Ohio) posted the first three-hit game of his young career, and sophomore Jeremie Rehak (Pittsburgh. Pa.) and freshman Robert Maddox III (Euclid, Ohio) collected two hits apiece.
Ohio freshman right-hander Jason Moulton (Toledo, Ohio) worked 6.0 solid innings on the mound for the Bobcats to earn the victory. In front of his hometown friends and family, Moulton allowed just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out six to improve to 2-2 on the season.
"Moulton threw the ball well today," said Carbone. He threw his fastball for strikes and made some good pitches when he had to."
Ohio trailed 3-1 after four innings, but exploded in the top of the fifth inning, scoring nine runs to take a 10-3 lead. The Bobcats went on to add three more runs in the sixth inning, and two more in the seventh inning, to take a 15-3 lead.
Toledo brought two runs across the plate in the bottom half of the seventh inning and two more in the eighth inning to trim the deficit to 15-7. The Rockets would get no closer, as Ohio brought two more runs across the plate in the top of the ninth for the final score of 17-7.
The Bobcats have won their first three MAC series, marking the first time they have won three-straight conference series since the 2003 season.
Next up for the Bobcats is a non-conference game against Xavier on Tuesday at Bob Wren Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
