ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio Bobcats garnered six hits to Western Michigan's four, but couldn't convert a run and lost to the Broncos, 4-0, Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 21-21 on the season and 6-11 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos improve to 17-14 overall and 9-6 in the MAC.
The Bobcats and Broncos will square off again tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Ohio Softball Field. Tomorrow is Pack The Park Day and tickets are just $1. It is also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. Admission is free for Ohio's faculty, staff, and their families.
Six different players hit in today's game for the Bobcats, and three saw action in the pitching circle.
In the bottom of the third, freshman Jordan Paden (Walla Walla, Wash.) got Ohio's first hit with a single to second. Freshman Melissa Bonner (Kings Mills, Ohio) extended her hitting streak to six games with a single to left field to lead off the fourth for the `Cats. Since returning to the Bobcat lineup on March 29, Bonner has hit in every game, including three against Northern Illinois yesterday afternoon. She currently stands atop the Bobcats standings with a .354 batting average.
Seniors Alicia Catlette (Mogadore, Ohio) and Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska), along with sophomore Shalene Petrich (Chehalis, Wash.) each hit in the fifth. Catlette singled to second, Waters hit a single to extend her hitting streak to six games, and Petrich singled to left field to extend her hitting streak to a team-high seven games.
The Bobcats' final hit of the game was by freshman Emily Wethington (New Palestine, Ind.) in the bottom of the sixth. She singled to center field.
Wethington, along with sophomore Candace Saucedo (Ontario, Calif.) and senior Michelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) pitched in the game. Saucedo started the game and pitched for three innings, allowing two hits and a run. Wethington pitched the next three innings, giving up two hits, three runs, while striking out three batters. Sauter pitched the last inning. She struck out one, but walked two. Kyla Sullivan pitched a complete game for the Broncos. She struck out just three.
