GREENVILLE, N.C. - After losing both of today's games in the second round of the Pirate Invitational, the Ohio softball team will play in the tournament's consolation game tomorrow at 9 a.m.
The Bobcats dropped to a 2-2 overall record after losing to East Carolina, 6-2, in game one and Boston College, 1-0, in game two.
"Today's outcomes are disappointing," said Head Coach Jill Matyuch. "We left a lot of emotion and effort on the field. We played six terrific innings against East Carolina. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it seven. East Carolina made some great defensive plays and kept a number of would-be runs off the board."
Both teams were scoreless in the first five innings of game one, until the Pirates scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth. The `Cats managed to score two runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Pirates went away with the victory.
Senior Alicia Catlette (Mogadore, Ohio) went 3-for-3 in the game and scored one of Ohio's late runs. Catlette singled at bat, advanced to second on a hit by pitch and scored on pinch hitter Candace Saucedo's (Ontario, Calif.) RBI single to center field.
Freshman Jordan Paden (Walla Walla, Wash.) advanced to third on Saucedo's RBI single then scored Ohio's final run of the game.
Senior MIchelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) pitched her second complete game of the season in taking the loss in the circle for the `Cats. Sauter had two strikeouts and allowed seven hits and six runs.
Game two was a shutout for Boston College. The Eagles scored the game-winning run in the top of the sixth. Both teams finished with seven hits and no errors.
"Our batters put a lot of pressure on Boston College's defense," said Matyuch. "Unfortunately, we didn't get that timely hit we needed. You've got to give credit to the BC defense for making the plays when they had to."
