BOONE, N.C. - The Bobcats ended a southern road trip with another solid victory and earned their fourth win of the year as they defeated Appalachian State, 25-9. Ohio improved to 4-2-1 on the season, while the Mountaineers fell to 3-5. Earlier in the week, Ohio downed The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. 35-3.
"I thought we wrestled pretty well today," said head coach Joel Greenlee. "We got off to a sluggish start and had some guys battling injury, but we still got the win, which says a lot about our team. We've been on the road for awhile now, and it will be good to get back and give the guys some rest."
Ohio's redshirt sophomore Quentin Keyes moved to 4-1 this season as Appalachian State forfeited the 133-pound match. Then junior Seth Morton earned a 5-2 decision over Mike Kessler to give Ohio a lead that it would keep the rest of the match.
Redshirt freshman Matt Reedy claimed his eighth victory of the season at 149 pounds with a 6-4 win over Chip Powell. Junior Clay Tucker scored Ohio's biggest win of the meet with an 11-2 major decision over Brett Houghton. Redshirt freshman Tommy Weinkam also notched his eighth win in a close 6-5 decision over Kyle Blevins at 165 pounds.
Appalachian State's Austin Trotman, nationally-ranked at 174 pounds by WrestlingReport.com, handed Ohio's Jacob Ison, also nationally-ranked, his first defeat of the year with a 7-2 victory. Ison is now 8-1 for the season. Dylan Temple of the Mountaineers, ranked 33rd at 184 pounds by WrestlingReport, took down redshirt freshman Nick Purdue 8-2 for Appalachian State's third and final win of the day.
Bobcat true freshman Dylan Wrage picked up his 10th victory of the season with a 4-0 shutout of David Pritz, while Andy Hartshorn defeated Dustin Heiser in overtime for Ohio, 2-1, in the final bout of the meet.
Ohio now has some time off before traveling to Reno, Nev. for the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday, Dec. 18. Check OhioBobcats.com for the latest news on Ohio wrestling.
