Day One Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. - After 568 bouts in almost nine hours, the Ohio wrestling team is tied for 13th place out of 28 teams with 22 points after the first day of competition at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center as part of the 2008 Southern Scuffle. Two Bobcat wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals in their weight class, redshirt sophomore Quentin Keyes and redshirt junior Jacob Ison.
In the team standings, Cal State Bakersfield holds a narrow lead with 44.5 points, while Virginia Tech is close behind in second place with 44 points and No. 3 Cornell is in third place with 43.5 points. Kent State and No. 17 Edinboro round out the top-five with 41.5 and 40.5 points, respectively.
At 133 pounds for Ohio, Keyes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) won his first two matches of the tournament to remain in the championship bracket heading into the final day of competition. He defeated Casey Boyle of host UNC Greensboro in the first round with a 6-2 decision and pinned Virginia Tech's Jared Jones in 4:13 for his second-round victory. He will face Mike Grey of Cornell on Tuesday.
Ohio's Ison (Batavia, Ohio) also won his first two bouts in the 174-pound championship bracket. He defeated Travis Erdman of Princeton in the first round, 6-0, and bested J.C. Oddo of The Citadel in a 3-2 decision in the second round. Ison will face Virginia's Chris Heinrich in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
