ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio wrestling team saw its first action of the 2008-09 season today in the annual Green & White scrimmage in The Convo Sunday afternoon. The Green team defeated the White team, 22-20, in a close contest. Head coach Joel Greenlee, now in his 12th year at the helm of the program, thought the intrasquad match-up served as a good starting point for the rest of the season.
"It was a good warm-up overall. We did a couple things we can't do at Michigan State next week, but that's why we do this," explained Greenlee. "I want to see more intensity, more aggressiveness, but I understand that's hard to do against a teammate," Greenlee said.
The 125-pound pairing pitted redshirt freshman Tyler Mashkow (Islip, N.Y.), a transfer from Hofstra University, against true freshman Kyle Ciccarello (South Euclid, Ohio). Mashkow emerged with the win, a 14-5 major decision.
At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Darrin Boing defeated sophomore Heath Allen (Bellefontaine, Ohio) in a 4-1 decision. Allen was the Bobcats' starter at 125 pounds last season.
The 141-pound match saw sophomore Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio), a national qualifier last season, defeat junior Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) in a close 3-2 decision. Lindsey is nationally ranked at 141 pounds in a preseason poll released by WrestlingReport.com.
Redshirt freshman Matt Reedy (Hiram, Ohio) defeated junior Kevin Christensen (Fairborn, Ohio) at 149 pounds by a 6-4 decision. Reedy is nationally ranked in one poll, while Christensen is the top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds in the MAC preseason poll.
At 157 pounds, freshman Chris Kline (Westerville, Ohio) defeated redshirt freshman Michael Fennell (Commack, N.Y) due to an injury default.
165 pounds saw the same result, as redshirt freshman Tommy Weinkam (Cincinnati, Ohio) defeated redshirt freshman Gabe Garcia (Toledo, Ohio) on an injury default by Garcia.
The only pin of the afternoon came in the 174-pound bout, as redshirt freshman Nick Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) pinned true freshman Steve Wilson (Marion, Ohio) in 1:09.
Sophomore Erik Schuth (Spencerport, N.Y.) defeated redshirt freshman Brian Driscoll (Avon Lake, Ohio) at 184 pounds by technical fall, 15-0. Schuth is ranked third at 184 pounds in the MAC preseason poll.
At 197 pounds, true freshman Dylan Wrage (Janesville, Iowa) defeated sophomore Chris Iammarino (Lyndhurst, Ohio) in a 2-1 decision. Iammarino is ranked third in the MAC preseason poll at 197 pounds.
At 285 pounds, redshirt freshman Andy Hartshorn (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) defeated sophomore Tim Samson (Toledo, Ohio) by a 5-3 decision.
Coach Greenlee was encouraged by the performances of the freshmen in the Green & White. "I thought the 125-pound match was a good one, and I also liked what I saw in the 197- and 174-pound matches."
The Bobcats, picked third in the MAC preseason poll, will hit the road for the Michigan State Open next weekend for the first official meet of the season on Nov. 9. The event in East Lansing is slated to start at 9 a.m. ET.
