Kalamazoo, MI-The Ohio women's soccer team tied Western Michigan 1-1 Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo. Junior forward Amy Lower (West Chester, Ohio) scored for Ohio in the 10th minute, while Patrice Impelido scored for the Broncos in the 71st.

Ohio moved to 2-8-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the Mid-American Conference, while WMU moved to 3-9-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the league.

“We had a much improved and consistent effort for the entire game,” said Ohio head coach Stacy Strauss. “We had a solid effort from the team as a whole and a particularly good game from Jess MacLean, Remi Famodu, Erika Schmitt, Toye Famodu and Amy Lower.”

“We need to keep the communication and effort we showed today and finish our chances moving forward.”

Ohio held the lead for most of the match following Lower’s early header. She scored off assists from Schmitt (Wyoming, Ohio) and sophomore midfielder Jackie Hanson (LaGrange, Ill.). Hanson found Schmitt, who then crossed it into the box for Lower’s marker.

The Bobcats fired six more shots on goal during the balance of the first half, but could not double the margin.

WMU outshot Ohio 9-6 in the second half and cashed in the equalizer when Impelido scored on assists from Caitlin Henderson and Nikolette Rivera. Rivera placed it in the box for Impelido who then fired it past MacLean (Loveland, Ohio), Ohio’s junior goalkeeper.

Ohio was outshot 6-3 in the two overtime periods, but hung on for the tie.

WMU held the edge in shots (21-17) and corner kicks (5-2). MacLean made seven saves in net for Ohio, while Julia Francy had four for the Broncos.

Ohio will play its third straight road game Friday at Ball State at 4 p.m.
