ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio senior Lauren Kohn scored a game-high 22 points as the Ohio Bobcats defeated the Akron Zips, 78-64, Tuesday night at The Convo.
With the win, Ohio improves to 10-8 on the season and extends its conference winning streak to three games for a 3-2 MAC record. Akron drops to 5-14 on the season and 0-5 in the MAC.
It was Kohn's third 20-point game of the season and her 15th double-digit game. She shot 7-of-11 from the floor, including 2-of-5 from three point range and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. In addition, she had nine rebounds and four steals.
Also scoring in double figures for the Bobcats were senior Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) and junior Jennifer Poff (St. Johns, Mich.). Ward had 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, she was also 4-of-8 from three point range. Poff scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 3-of-4 from three point range, and dished out a game-high seven assists.
Center Chandra Myers (Sugarcreek, Ohio) was a dominate force inside for the Bobcats, posting eight points, seven rebounds and a career-best four assists. Sophomore Jennifer Bushby (Gahanna, Ohio) finished with five points, two rebounds and a steal.
Three players finished in double digits for the Zips, led by Amanda Sedlack with 17 points. Keyla Snowden had 11 points and Kara Murphy added 10 points and seven rebounds.
For the game, Ohio out-shot Akron 47.5 percent to 34.4 percent, while the Zips won the battle of the boards 42-to-37.
After being tied, 6-6, at the 17:55 mark in the first half, Ward made a three pointer that gave Ohio a 9-6 lead with 17:33 on the clock. The Bobcats stayed on top for the rest of the game only allowing Akron to come as close as two points. At halftime the Bobcats had a 14-point lead, 40-26.
Ohio's 50 percent shooting from the floor in the second half proved too much for the Zips, as the Bobcats led by as many as 19 points before closing out the 14-point win, 78-64.
This weekend, Ohio will play Central Michigan on the road in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The game is scheduled for Saturday at noon. It will also televised via MAC TV.
