Ohio's Jason Marshall tallied his first pin and dual win of the season against NC State but the Wolfpack slipped past the Bobcats 23-18 in a dual match on Sunday afternoon in the
Convocation
Center
.
Going into the third period,
Marshall (
West Liberty,
Ohio
) and NC State's Bobby Isola were locked into a scoreless tie but in one deft move, the sophomore pulled Isola over his hip and slowly rolled his shoulders down to the mat. While it was
Marshall
's first win in a dual meet this season, he improved his overall record (including tournament competition) to 7-12.
Ohio's Seth Morton (Martin's Ferry,
Ohio
) recorded a dominate victory as well in the 133 pound weight class. The sophomore defeated NC State's Darius Little with a 10-2 major decision. Morton notched nine straight points before Little recorded his first of the match.
The big wins continued for
Ohio
with Clay Tucker's technical fall victory at 157 pounds. Tucker, who has made the transition from 147 to 157 this season, defeated the Wolfpack's Chris Gambino 19-1. The match was called in the third period as Tucker's lead surpassed 16 points.
Jacob Ison (
Batavia,
Ohio
) also notched a win for the Bobcats, earning a tough 8-4 decision at 174 pounds to cut NC State's lead to 20-18 heading into the final match.
Erik Schuth (
Spencerport,
N.Y.
) took an early lead on two penalty points called against NC State's Ryan and dealt with multiple warning calls against Goodman for illegally grabbing headgear. But Goodman earned a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Schuth tied up the bout at 3-3 with less than one minute left to wrestle, but the tie remained at the end of the third period and Goodman's 1:24 advantage in riding time gave him one point and thus a one-point lead which locked up the victory for the Wolfpack.
Perhaps the most exciting bout of the day came at 141 pounds with
Ohio freshman Germane Lindsey (
Cincinnati,
Ohio
) giving NC State's No. 7 ranked Joe Caramanica all he could handle. Caramanica raced out to an early 4-0 lead but Lindsey earned three takedowns during the course of the match while Caramanica could only muster escape points. But NC State's sophomore from
Nazareth,
Pa.
, used those escape points to stay one step ahead of Lindsey and after a stalling penalty put Lindsey just one point away from a tie at 7-6 and two points away from the upset, Caramanica held out and stayed just far enough away from Lindsey's multiple shot attempts to take the win.
The Bobcats will take to the road after two straight home duals for a bout with
Buffalo
on Saturday, Jan. 26.
