ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio women's basketball team retained an early first half lead to power past conference rival Miami, 74-55, Saturday afternoon at The Convo.
After pulling ahead, 3-2, in the first 34 seconds of the game, the Bobcats shot 54.7 percent from the floor, including 47.1 percent from the three point line and 88.9 percent from the free throw line, to stay ahead and defeat the RedHawks for their second straight conference win of the season.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to a 9-8, 2-2 MAC record, while the RedHawks fall to a 10-8, 2-2 MAC record.
For the first time this season, Ohio had five players score in double figures, led by center Chandra Myers (Sugarcreek, Ohio) with her first career double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds. After finishing the first half with four points, Myers quickly found her rhythm in the second frame scoring back-to-back baskets to kick off scoring for the Bobcats. For the game, Myers made 8-of-9 attempts from the field and was 1-of-2 from the free throw line. She also had two blocks and one assist.
Lauren Kohn (Adrian, Mich.) and Jennifer Bushby (Gahanna, Ohio) each tallied 13 points. It was Kohn's seventh straight double figure scoring game and her 14th of the season. It was Bushby's second straight double figure scoring game, she has six on the season. Kohn posted seven rebounds, while nailing 2-of-4 three point attempts. Bushby made 5-of-8 attempts from the field, including 3-of-4 from three point range, she also had five assists.
Lauren Hmiel (York, Pa.) mimicked her performance at Buffalo last Wednesday with 12 points and eight rebounds. Hmiel had a perfect night, connecting on 5-of-5 field goal attempts and 2-of-2 attempts from the free throw line. Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) finished with 10 points, two rebounds and a game-high six assists.
Simone Redd (Warrensville Heights, Ohio) finished with three points, while Jackie Hiebert (Maple Grove, Minn.), Kamille Buckner (Chicago, Ill.) and Catherine Cain (Dayton, Ohio) had two points apiece for the Bobcats.
Amanda Jackson, the MAC's leading scorer, led Miami with 20 points on just 7-of-21 shooting from the field. Laura Markwood added 14 points for the RedHawks.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 22 to host Akron at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
