OXFORD, Ohio - In just its second conference game of the season, the No. 11 Ohio field hockey team defeated Miami, 3-1, on Sunday.
With the win, Ohio improves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the MAC. Miami falls to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.
The Bobcats built an early 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of play with goals from Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) and Marcy Dull (Ephrata, Pa.).
Coetzee kicked off Ohio's scoring run with a goal at the 9:05 mark on an assist from her sister Estienne Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa). Dull scored Ohio's second goal off a quick transition and assist from Nina Bruno (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Katelyn Shelley (Ephrata, Pa.). Dull has scored a goal in each of Ohio's last four games and totals six goals on the season.
Alyssa Nye scored Miami's first goal at the 21:08 mark to pull the RedHawks within one at 2-1.
Both teams were scoreless until Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) scored her ninth goal of the season with little more than seven minutes left in the game to lift Ohio to victory, 3-1.
"We started off strong today," said Head Coach Neil Macmillan. "We were fortunate to convert a couple of early opportunities, but then didn't defend as well as we needed to and let Miami back in the game. It was a hard fought game until we executed on a corner and got a tip up and over the goalkeeper to finish the game up for us."
Ohio will take a break from its conference schedule with a match-up against St. Louis on Sept. 29. The `Cats will then pick up MAC play against Missouri State on Sept. 30.
