ATHENS, Ohio - Despite out-shooting their opponent 8-5, the Ohio women's soccer team dropped their 2007 season opener to DePaul, 2-0, on Friday afternoon.
DePaul took the lead on Callie Hemming's (Geneva, Ill.) header goal in the 19th minute and the Blue Demons quickly padded their lead with a Shannon Williams (Bellwood, Ill.) strike on a break away just four minutes later.
"We gave up two pretty bad goals," said head coach Stacy Strauss. "Some of it was a lack of focus but we can't afford to make mistakes in the back."
Courtney Mink (Mason) led the Bobcats with a game-high three shots on goal. The junior forward also paced the team with four total shots in the first game of the Cleveland State Fall Classic.
"She is doing the best job right now of moving around and looking for the ball," Strauss said of Mink. "She is dangerous when she has it."
Keeper Jess MacLean (Loveland) started the game in between the pipes and recorded two saves but the sophomore also allowed two goals and was charged with the loss.
The Bobcats kept the pressure on the Blue Demons, as evidenced by their shot advantage and whopping 7-1 margin in corners taken, but DePaul's sophomore keeper Brittni Lally (Cincinnati) tallied five saves and earned the clean sheet victory in new head coach Erin Chastain's first game with the Blue Demons.
Blue Demon freshman midfielder Tara Strickland (Libertyville, Ill.) was issued the only card of the game, a yellow in the 51st minute. DePaul was whistled for 17 fouls in the game, compared to only nine infractions by the Bobcats.
Ohio will be back in action on Sunday in its second game of the Cleveland State Fall Classic. The Bobcats will battle the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure at 12:30 p.m.
