ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio softball team lost to Akron, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field.
Ohio (18-24, 7-7 MAC) finished with two runs on seven hits and two errors and left six players on base. Akron (14-19, 5-5 MAC) finished with three runs on eight hits and two errors while leaving eight on base.
Freshman Candace Saucedo (Ontario, Calif.) took the loss for Ohio as she pitched her third complete game of the season. She allowed eight hits, three earned runs and two walks while striking out one batter. Lindsay Bodeker pitched a complete game for Akron, allowing seven hits and two runs.
Senior Debbie Szalejko (Beavercreek, Ohio) had her 14th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 and extending her hitting streak to five games. Szalejko singled to the catcher on a 1-1 pitch in the fifth inning for her first hit and singled to short on a 1-2 pitch in the seventh inning for her second hit of the game.
Freshman Deanna Hartsough (Santa Ana, Calif.) went 2-for-2 with two RBI. She hit a single to second base in the fourth inning and drove in Saucedo and Marian Davis (Brighton, Mich.), putting Ohio on the board for the first and only time in the game. Davis led the inning off with a single up the middle, Saucedo reached on an error by Akron's second baseman and they both advanced a base on a ground ball before scoring.
The Zips got on the board first with one run in the second inning and followed up with two more runs in the third inning.
"We put forth a great effort today," said Head Jill Matyuch. "We adjusted well and the intensity was there."
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday against Wright State in a doubleheader at the Ohio Softball Field at 1 p.m.
