ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Lauren Kohn scored a team-high 18 points and Quintana Ward scored 10 points as the Ohio women's basketball team lost to Michigan, 69-64, in a close-knit game Friday night.
Kohn (Adrian, Mich.) hit 6-of-13 shots from the floor, including 2-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the foul line. She also had six rebounds, a team-high five assists and one steal. Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) made 4-of-8 shots from the floor, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Chandra Myers (Sugarcreek, Ohio) led Ohio (5-6) on the boards for the fifth time this season with a career-high 11 rebounds. Myers also had four points, while Jennifer Bushby (Gahanna, Ohio), Jennifer Poff (St. Johns, Mich.) and Jackie Hiebert (Maple Grove, Minn.) had six points each.
Bushby was solid, nailing 2-of-2 attempts from the floor and three-point land. Poff was 2-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Hiebert made 3-of-4 floor attempts and matched a career-high five rebounds.
Four players finished in double-digits for Michigan (7-3), led by Jessica Minnfield with a game-high 19 points. Carly Benson had 16 points, Krista Phillips had 11 points and Ta'Shia Walker added 10.
Ohio out-shot Michigan 48-44.4 percent in the game, but had 27 turnovers compared to Michigan's 12.
After pulling off an 11-2 run to take a 38-30 lead at halftime, the Bobcats relinquished a ten-point lead in the second frame. The Wolverines edged closer and closer to tie the game, 59-59, with 5:40 on the clock before taking the lead, 62-61, that they kept until the end of regulation.
The Bobcats gained a quick 8-5 lead to start the game with Ward scoring five straight points and Poff knocking down a three at the 16:20 mark. Michigan then went on a 4-0 run to gain its first lead of the game at 9-8.
Ohio responded with a run of its own. Kohn and Redd made back-to-back three pointers to put the `Cats up by five, 14-9, at the 13:01 mark. Michigan then made back-to-back buckets to tie the game, 14-14, with 12:12 on the clock.
After trading baskets for four minutes the Wolverines gained a four-point lead, 24-20, at the 6:46 mark. A three by Kohn pulled Ohio within one at 24-23. Michigan's Walker then made two free throws for a 26-23 Michigan lead.
Bushby then hit a three to tie the game, 26-26, with 4:03 remaining in the opening frame. A basket by Myers sparked a run that gave Ohio the advantage at the half.
The Bobcats head home for their next game. Ohio will host Morehead State on Dec. 30 at The Convo. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
