ATHENS, Ohio - The No. 11 Ohio field hockey team extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-0 shutout of conference foe Central Michigan Friday afternoon at Peggy Pruitt Field.
The Bobcats improve to 10-3 on the season and 4-0 in Mid-American Conference play. The Chippewas fall to 2-8 and 1-2 in the MAC.
Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) led the Bobcat offense with two goals. It is Coetzee's fourth straight scoring game. She has eight goals on the season.
"I'm just playing my role," said Coetzee. "I look for the right opportunities to score and when one presents itself, I just put the ball in. I'm determined to make a difference in the game. I get a kick out of scoring and that is what makes me play better."
Coetzee scored Ohio's first goal 25:50 into the game from the top of the circle off a feed from Lauren Stahlhuth (St. Louis, Mo.). Coetzee later scored at the 59:06 mark on an assist by Nikki Gnozzio (Flanders, N.J.) and Lindsay Schwartz (Littz, Pa.).
Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) scored her tenth goal of the season at the 33:48 mark, while Estienne Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) scored her sixth goal of the season with 20 minutes left in the game.
The Bobcats totaled 17 shots to the Chippewas' five and out-cornered them 8-2.
Bobcat goalie Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.) got her tenth win of the season and played 66:20 minutes with one save. Katherine Claeys (Lake Forest, Ill.) spent 3:40 minutes in goal for Ohio and recorded her first save of the year.
"We controlled the game right from the start," said Head Coach Neil Macmillan. "Our team defense was very good in the first half and continued to be good in the second half. We got a little loose near the end but had a 4-goal lead by then. We played very well."
Ohio will be back in action on Sunday at Kent State. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
