ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio field hockey club suffered a 1-0 setback in its home opener Friday afternoon against 15th-ranked Indiana.
The Bobcats (1-4) started the game quickly with Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) blasting a shot off the post less than five minutes into the game. The Hoosiers (4-1) struck first with a goal at 28:37. Lydia Schrott threw an unassisted shot at the net, which got by Ohio goalie Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.) to give the Hoosiers the 1-0 lead.
Near the end of the first period the Hoosiers scored a goal off a penalty corner at 00:49, but that goal was waived off by officials. Field hockey rules state that in a penalty corner, once an attacking player hits the ball to a teammate just outside the striking circle line, a goal cannot be scored until the ball has traveled outside the circle. The Hoosiers never got the ball outside of the striking circle prompting the officials to waive off the goal.
The Bobcats dominated the second period and out-shot the Hoosiers 8 to 3.
"We dominated the game especially in the second half," Ohio Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "Unfortunately, we let one get by us in the first half but I don't think we need to change anything because we're doing the right stuff."
Albini and Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) led the Bobcats with two shots on goal each, while Martin made two saves between the pipes.
The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 10 against Radford at 1 p.m. It's the second home game of the season for the Bobcats.
