Final Stats

ATHENS, Ohio - One day after blanking the Ball State Cardinals in its Mid-American Conference opener, the Ohio field hockey team and their stingy defense shut out the Miami RedHawks 1-0.

Sophomore Estienne Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) broke a scoreless game at 29:45 with a goal off an assist from Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) that found its way past Miami goalkeeper Megan Stengel and into the back of the cage.

"Estienne really had a great strike today," said Head Coach Neil Macmillan. "She scored a goal in our game yesterday, as well, so it's good to see her getting some goals."

The Bobcats (5-5) dominated the RedHawks (4-6) in the first period by outshooting them 5-0.

In the second period, the Bobcats continued their tough defense and withstood Miami's numerous scoring threats.

The Bobcats outshot Ball State 8-3 in the game. Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) led the team with three shots, followed by Amanda Arnold (Oceanport, N.J.) and Albini who each had two.

The strong Bobcat team effort was anchored by sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.). Martin had three saves on the day.

"I think that something that doesn't show up in the stats is Jessie's ability to stop plays when she comes out of goal and cleans up a play before it can develop," said Macmillan. "Unfortunately it doesn't get recorded as a save. Our defense was very good, especially near the end of the game."

With the win the Bobcats improve to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The Bobcats next game will be Saturday, Sept. 30 as they hit the road to face Missouri State at 12 p.m.
