Final Stats

ATHENS, Ohio - Junior Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.) tallied three saves as the Ohio field hockey team began the MAC regular season with a victory over Ball State on Friday, Sept. 22. The 4-0 win over the Cardinals is the Bobcats second shut out of the season.

The Bobcats (4-5) struck first with a goal from Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) off an assist from Lindsay Schwartz (Lititz, Pa.). Less than 10 minutes after the first goal, Ohio went on to score twice before the end of the first period. Estienne Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) scored an unassisted goal at the 22:01 mark, while Megan Rentschler (Akron, Pa.) scored at 26:06 off an assist from Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.). The Bobcats dominated the Cardinals (1-7) in the first period by outshooting them 7-1.

In the second period, the Bobcats continued their tough defense and added a goal by Katelyn Shelley (Ephrata, Pa.) off an assist from Albini, the goal was Shelley's first of the season.

"Katelyn is a very good player," said Head Coach Neil Macmillan. "I like what she can do for us right now. She can come off the bench and help fill-in a hole when needed. For her to get on the score sheet today was excellent."

The Bobcats outshot Ball State 12-3 in the game. Estienne Coetzee led the team with seven shots and three shots on goal.

"I was really happy about the way we played today, Macmillan said. "We made great changes in the first half. A 4-0 win to begin conference play is a great start."

The Bobcats have little time to rest as they return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m to face MAC foe Miami.
