ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio field hockey team fell for the first time in the last three games when it was defeated by No. 6 Ohio State 6-1 Tuesday evening at Peggy Pruitt Field.
The Bobcats (3-5) fell behind early after they surrendered a goal 4:08 into the game. Ohio went on to give up five more goals before they were able to breakup the shutout. With less than three minutes left in the first period the Bobcats scored their first goal. Senior Amanda Arnold (Oceanport, N.J.) scored a goal off an assist from Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif). Ohio went to the half trailing 6-1. The Buckeyes (6-0) out shot the Bobcats 9-5 in the first period.
"We have to give Ohio State credit, because they played really well in the first half," Ohio Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "They had nine shots in the first period and scored six goals off those shots."
In the second period, the Bobcats turned up their defense and held the No. 6 team in the nation scoreless while holding the Buckeyes to four shots.
Bobcat goal keeper Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.) made five saves on the day and was credited with all six goals allowed.
"The second half was good," Macmillan said. "We moved the ball a lot better and our corner defense was excellent. Unfortunately we gave them the lead early, which proved to be insurmountable."
The Bobcats have faced nationally ranked opponents in six of their first eight matches this year, but this coming weekend they begin Mid-American Conference play when they take on Ball State and Miami (OH) on Friday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23.
