ATHENS, Ohio - Junior Torrie Albini helped give the Ohio field hockey squad its second victory of the 2006 campaign with two goals, her second and third of the season, as the Bobcats defeated Radford by a final of 3-1 at Peggy Pruitt Field on Sept. 10.
Albini (Escondido, Calif.) had back-to-back goals in the first period. Albini's goals gave Ohio an early 2-0 lead early in the match. At 18:24, she converted a penalty stroke. Following the restart, Ohio caused a turnover and Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) found Albini who blasted it into the back of the goal. The Bobcats controlled much of the first period, outshooting the Highlanders, 7-0, and earning all five penalty corners.
In the second period, Coetzee put the Bobcats up 3-0, less than five minutes into the period, with a shot that got by Radford goalkeeper, Megan Stucke. The goal was her third of the season. Meredith Evans spoiled the Bobcats shut-out when she rolled in her shot as she collided with Ohio goalkeeper Katherine Claeys (Lake Forest, Ill.).
The Bobcats outshot Radford, 12-3, while also having a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners. Martin stopped two shots for Ohio in 58:54 of action. Claeys played the final 11:06 and did not have a save.
"I don't feel like we did too much different from what we did against Indiana," Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "I just think we were smarter on getting the ball on goal today. We created more opportunities, which Torrie definitely took advantage of. All of our goals were good, but we had plenty of other opportunities to make some things happen, especially at the end of the game where three or four of our freshmen had opportunities to score."
The Bobcats will next be in action this Friday, Sept. 15, when they travel to take on Davidson. The game will get underway in Davidson, N.C., at 6:30 p.m.
