HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - With a one-under-par 70 on Saturday, Ohio University senior Jon Johasky (Lower Burrell, Pa.) tied for sixth at the 37th Annual Marshall Invitational with a career-best score of 216 (73-73-70) for 54 holes.
As a squad, the Bobcats tied for eighth in the 15-team tournament at the Guyan Golf and Country Club. Their score of 887 (297-297-293) was just nine strokes higher than second-place Ball State. Eastern Michigan won the two-day event with a mark of 868 (294-285-289).
Ohio senior Brian Bickle (Gallipolis, Ohio) tied for 16th with a score of 220 (73-73-74) on the 6,476-yard, par-71 course. Fellow senior Brian Elsea (Columbus, Ohio) carded a 226 (76-77-73) to tie for 46th out of 84 individual competitors.
Also competing for the Bobcats were juniors Mark Cimarolli (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Ryan Siekmann (Dublin, Ohio). Cimarolli tied for 64th at 229 (75-78-76) while Siekmann finished in a tie for 72nd with a 232 (78-74-80).
Easten Michigan's Peter Sauerbrei and Marshall's Shawn Warren both completed the event at even par (213) but Sauerbrei won individual medalist honors in a playoff. The sixth-place finish by Johasky was the best of his career and the third-best placement by an Ohio golfer this year.
The Bobcats now have two weeks to prepare for the Rutherford Intercollegiate on April 22-23 in State College, Pa. Ohio finished fourth out of 15 teams at that very same event last year.
