Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio - Sophomore second baseman Alicia Catlette (Mogadore, Ohio) drove in a career-high four runs but it was not enough as the Ohio softball team fell 7-5 to Mid-American Conference foe Akron.
The Bobcats fall to 6-8 in MAC play and 23-30 overall with the loss. Ohio was swept by Akron this weekend, marking the first time this season that the Bobcats did not split a two-game set with a conference opponent.
The first two innings went by without a score before Akron put two runs on the board in the top of the third to take the lead. Ohio countered with two runs in its half of the frame.
With one out, Marian Davis (Brighton, Mich.) walked. Catlette followed with her second home run of the year, yanking the pitch down the left-field line to even the score at two.
The Zips retook the lead with a single tally in the fourth inning but their lead would not last long as the Bobcats put three runs on the board in their half of the frame.
Robin Miller (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) singled to lead off the inning. Courtney Waters (Eagle River, Alaska) reached on an error by the Akron second baseman to put runners on first and second.
Following a Debbie Szalejko (Beavercreek, Ohio) sacrifice bunt that moved each runner up one spot, Davis laid down a sac squeeze that scored Miller. Davis took second on the play at the plate and Waters moved up to third. Catlette followed with a two-run single through the right side to give Ohio a 5-3 edge.
Akron cut into the Bobcat lead with a single run in the fifth and took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning to make the score 7-5. Ohio put runners on in the sixth and seventh innings but was unable to mount a comeback.
MIchelle Sauter (Chehalis, Wash.) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs, only one earned, on two hits in three innings of work. Candace Warden (Hagerstown, Md.) got the start for Ohio and went four innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits.
Catlette finished the day 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and a run scored. Davis reached base all four times she came to the plate as she was hit by a pitch twice, walked and singled.
The Bobcats will take a break from conference play when they go on the road to take on Youngstown State Wednesday in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
