Dec. 17, 2006
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ohio wrestling team won two of its three outings at the Purdue Duals on Sunday, Dec. 17. The Bobcats defeated Indianapolis, 31-10, and Carson-Newman, 36-6, before losing to the host Boilermakers, 26-7. Ohio is now 7-3 through its first 10 dual meets of the 2006-07 season.
"I think we wrestled pretty well today," Head Coach Joel Greenlee said. "I think we're pretty close to being a great team. We're young and we're still learning. We didn't wrestle very well on Friday (at Findlay), but we came back and wrestled great today. I'm impressed with the way they handled it."
Several Bobcats earned two victories in Sunday's action. Sophomore Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) was 2-0 at 141 pounds, earning a technical fall victory against Indianapolis and a 4-3 decision versus Carson-Newman. Freshman Kevin Christensen (Springfield, Ohio) completed the Bobcats' perfect day at 141 with a 4-3 decision against the Boilermakers, improving to 4-2 on the season.
Sophomore Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio) competed in all three matches at 157 pounds, posting a 2-1 record with wins against the Greyhounds and Eagles. Frerichs earned his first fall of the campaign, defeating the Eagles' Daniel Stover at the 2:29 mark. He narrowly missed an undefeated performance with a 5-4 loss to the Boilermakers.
Freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) continued his strong season with two victories in his three matches at 165 pounds. Ison, who now owns a team-best 14 victories, took both his victories by fall. He pinned the Greyhounds' Nick Lain at the 2:44 mark for his first win of the day and took out the Eagles' Sherman White at the 4:44 mark. Ison's lone loss was a 12-10 decision against Purdue.
Junior Antoine Love (Gahanna, Ohio) posted an undefeated day with two wins in as many tries at 174 pounds. Love pinned Indianapolis' Mike Jackson at the 1:34 mark and defeated Purdue's Nick Corpe by an 11-3 major decision. Love's two wins put him at 12-2 for the season with a perfect 7-0 mark in dual competition. Junior Adam Faires (Glouster, Ohio) also earned a victory at 174 pounds, defeating Carson-Newman's Patrick Belou, 9-0.
At 184 pounds, senior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) went 2-1. After a major decision victory against Indianapolis and a decision against Carson-Newman, Terbay suffered a 3-2 loss against the Boilermakers. It was one of four matches Purdue won by two points or less.
Sophomore Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) and senior Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) posted 2-1 marks at 197 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively. Both wrestlers earned decisions against Indianapolis and major decisions versus Carson-Newman before coming up on the short end of decisions against Purdue.
At 125 pounds, freshman Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio) split his two matches, while sophomore Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio) earned his first win of the season at 133 pounds after returning from injury on Friday at Findlay.
"There was four or five matches in that Purdue match that could have gone either way," Greenlee said. "We look at it like we're right there. We really feel like we're gaining ground and we're getting somewhere.
Ohio's 2-1 record was good for second place. The Boilermakers went 3-0 with Indianpolis posting a 1-2 mark and Carson-Newman going 0-3.
The Bobcats have 11 days off before competing at the two-day Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. on Dec. 29 and 30.
