BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Ohio wrestling team kicked off its dual meet season in a thrilling manner Saturday as the Bobcats topped Cumberland, Bucknell, Appalachian State, and Oregon in dual meets before falling to Indiana in the finale at the Hoosier Duals at Assembly Hall.
"From start to finish the guys wrestled hard," Head Coach Joel Greenlee said. "Today was a great opportunity for some guys to wrestle and a great opportunity for us as a team. They wrestled hard-nosed all day."
Junior Antione Love (Gahanna, Ohio) posted a perfect 4-0 record in competition on the day and tallied three pins at the meet. Love pushed his 2006 record to 8-2 with three pins and a major decision after transferring to Ohio from Iowa Central Community College.
"Antione has a huge, huge amount of potential," Greenlee said. "He goes out there and is consistent and does what he needs to do. As much as he's done so far this season, he can get even better. He works hard every day to reach his potential."
Freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) continued his impressive rookie season with a 3-1 record. Ison posted on win by pin and one by major decision as he ran his season record to 8-3. Sophomore Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) had a good showing in his season debut with a 3-2 record, including two wins via pin-fall. Senior Matt Smith (Sandyville, W.Va.) and redshirt freshman Clay Tucker (Martins Ferry, Ohio) each also went 3-2 on the day.
The Bobcats kicked off the day with a 27-15 win over Cumberland in Ohio's first dual meet of the season and just the second event on the Bobcats' schedule. Ohio got pins from three of its wrestlers, including Love at 174 points. Love pinned Cumberland's Matt Reis in just 1:14. Ison continued the impressive start to his Bobcat career with a pin of Grant Hoppel in 2:42 at 165 pounds. The Bobcats also got a pin from Reichard, who got the three count on Angelo Price in 4:21. Smith earned a 5-0 win at 133 pounds and senior Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) won via disqualification to round out the Ohio victory over Cumberland.
Ohio continued the day with a 26-13 win over Bucknell in the Bobcats second meet of the day. Tucker earned the most decisive win of the match with an 18-3 technical fall over Michael Guttilla. Smith earned his second win of the day at 133 pounds by a score of 3-0 while Terbay won via forfeit for his second victory. Freshman Mike Wilson (Marion, Ohio) earned a 7-5 decision at 125 pounds after a loss in his opener against Cumberland. Sophomore Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) also rebounded from a loss to earn a 5-2 win at 141 pounds. Junior Adam Faires (Glouster, Ohio) and senior Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) rounded out the Ohio victories against Bucknell, Faires earned a 6-1 win a 174 pounds while Adelman won by a score of 5-1 at heavyweight.
The Bobcats showed no mercy in their third event of the day with a 34-3 victory over Appalachian State. Reichard earned his second win via pin fall on the day with a pin of Brandon Brothers in 1:08 at 197 pounds. Terbay earned his third win of the day with an 8-0, major decision win over Kevin Worsowicz at 184 pounds. Ison faced a tough opponent in Tommy Hutchinson at 165 pounds, but prevailed with a 3-1, overtime victory for his second win of the day. Freshman Kevin Christensen (Springfield, Ohio) saw his first action of the day and topped Corey Hulsey 8-3 at 141 pounds. Heavyweight freshman Joe Ellwood (New Philadelphia, Ohio) also got his first action of the day and earned a 4-3 victory for his first career win. Wilson and Tucker also earned minor decision wins in the defeat of Appalachian State while Fladda won via forfeit.
Ohio earned its closest win of the day against Oregon, maintaining a perfect record on the day with a 19-18 win over the Ducks. The Ducks and Bobcats each recorded five wins in competition against one another, including one pin per team. Love recorded the only fall of the meet for the Bobcats with a pin of Ron Lee in 6:39, matching a pin by Oregon's Beau Malia at 125 pounds. The difference in the final score proved to be a major decision win by Ison at 165 pounds. The first-year Bobcat topped Kyle Bounds 11-3 to help Ohio to the victory. The Bobcats earned a pair of one point, minor decision wins from Smith at 133 pounds and Tucker at 149 pounds. Ohio's fifth win came from Reichard, who earned a decisive 9-2 win over Chris Robertson at 197 pounds.
The Bobcats were unable to complete the perfect day as Big Ten opponent Indiana topped Ohio 31-9 to bring the day to an end. Love moved to 4-0 with one of two Bobcat wins on the day as he pinned Trevor Perry in 3:19. Adelman earned the other Bobcat victory with a 7-2 win over Justin Kuhn at heavyweight.
Ohio will continue action next weekend when the Bobcats participate in the Cliff Keen Invitational from Las Vegas.
