EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Ohio wrestling team officially began its 2006-07 season Sunday, when the Bobcats took part in the Michigan State Open at the Jenison Field House. The event featured more than 360 wrestlers from 21 different schools.
Junior transfer Antione Love (Gahanna, Ohio) led the Bobcats as he took fifth place in the 174-pound weight class. Love started out with three consecutive minor decision wins in the championship bracket of the event, including an 8-6 decision over fourth-seeded John Murphy (MSU). Love's title hopes ended after a loss to top-seeded Matt Herrington (Pennsylvania) in the semifinals of the event. Love, who earned All-America honors at Iowa Central Community College last season, dropped his next match in the consolation bracket and then earned the fifth-place outcome with a win via forfeit in his final match.
Ohio had a pair of solid performances in the 165-pound bracket. Freshman Jacob Ison (Batavia, Ohio) was the only other Bobcat to place in the event with a seventh-place finish at 165 pounds. Ison earned a first-round win as he defeated Greg Heinz (Kent State) with a 13-3 major decision victory. Ison fell in the second round of the championship bracket but then earned back-to-back decision victories and a win via injury default in the consolation bracket. A loss to third-seeded Rocky Cozart (MSU) dropped Ison to the seventh-place match, where he earned a win via injury default to claim seventh place. Freshman Anthony Ciraky (Westerville, Ohio) carried the seventh-seed into the tournament and earned a 3-0 win in the first round of the event. After a loss dropped Ciraky to the consolation bracket, the Bobcat newcomer earned a 3-0 win before falling in the round of 16.
Freshman Joe Tymosczcuk (Mentor, Ohio) recorded the only pin of the day for the Bobcats with a pin of Freddie Deramus (MSU) in the first round of the heavyweight division. Tymosczcuk earned the pin in 3:49 but dropped his next two matches to finish competition at the event. Senior Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) also earned a win in the first round of the heavyweight but fell in his next two matches.
Freshman Seth Morton (Canal Winchester, Ohio), after dropping his first match in the 125-pound bracket, earned back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket. Morton topped Walker Faison (MSU) 9-4 and then defeated Robert Joyce (Northwestern) 5-0 before exiting the consolation bracket with a loss.
Senior Matt Smith (Sandyville, W.Va.) and freshman Kevin Christensen (Springfield, Ohio) each earned one win on the day.
The Bobcats return to action Nov. 25 when they take part in the Hoosier Duals from Bloomington, Ind. Ohio will face Bucknell, Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, Oregon, and Indiana at the event.
