Box Score

Kent, Ohio - The Ohio field hockey team lost its first Mid-American Conference game of the season Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1 at Kent State's Murphy Mellis Field. The loss dropped the Bobcats to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in MAC play. The Golden Flashes are now 5-9 overall and 203 in the MAC.

The Golden Flashes got off to a quick start at 12:27 with a shot by Liz Fettrow that got by goalkeeper Jessie Martin (Louisville, Ky.).Fettrow's goal was only the second goal that the Bobcats have allowed in five MAC games this season. The goal by Fettrow would also be the only score of the first half. The Golden Flashes outshot the Bobcats 14-13, although the Bobcats won the first half penalty shot battle, 9-2.

In the second half, the Bobcats would strike first and tie the game at 1-1 as junior Torrie Albini (Escondido, Calif.) scored an unassisted goal off a penalty stroke less than three minutes into the half. The Bobcat defense played the Golden Flashes tough, but at the 48:19 mark Kent State's Natalie Barrett scored a goal off a rebound. The goal by Barrett would prove to be the game-winner as Kent State hung on to defeat the Bobcats.

Ohio finished with a ten-to-three advantage in penalty corners and finished with 17 shots to the Golden Flashes' 19. Albini led the Bobcats with seven shots in the game. Sophomore Rachelle Coetzee (Bloemfontein, South Africa) added five shots to the team's total. Martin finished with eights saves.

The Bobcats have now lost 10 consecutive regular season games to Kent State.

Ohio came into the contest Sunday with a comfortable lead in the MAC standings but with the loss to Kent State, the Bobcats now only have a one game lead over conference foe, Miami. The Bobcats will look to get back to their winning ways next weekend with a pair of road contests. Ohio takes on Ball State Friday (Oct. 13) in Muncie, Ind. and Miami Saturday (Oct. 14) in Oxford.
